ATR
Arrow
An in-store AR activation that transforms All The Right's centerpiece arrow sculpture into a portal between physical and digital space. Users scan the iconic arrow, and a glowing 3D counterpart materializes above it - then extends through the storefront window and out into the street. Object tracking keeps the augmentation anchored to the real sculpture as users move around the store, creating a persistent bridge between ATR's physical presence and a new digital dimension.
This project demonstrates how AR can extend a brand's physical footprint beyond its four walls - turning a retail object into a beacon visible from the sidewalk through a customer's phone.
The Concept
Every brand has a signature element - for ATR, it is the arrow. The physical sculpture sits at the center of the store, a directional symbol that has become synonymous with the brand over decades. The challenge was to amplify that icon without replacing it. To add a digital dimension that enhances the physical artifact rather than competing with it.
The solution: an AR layer that reads as a supernatural extension of the real sculpture. The digital arrow does not sit passively above the display - it launches outward, through the glass, into the street. The metaphor is deliberate: ATR's influence does not stop at the storefront. The arrow's trajectory from interior to exterior mirrors the brand's reach from a Queens shop to a global streetwear presence.
How It Works
Scan
Users point their camera at ATR's physical arrow sculpture inside the store. The object recognition system identifies the sculpture's unique geometry and orientation, establishing a precise spatial anchor for the digital overlay.
Augment
A glowing 3D arrow materializes above the real sculpture with energy effects, bloom lighting, and particle systems that create an otherworldly presence. The digital layer is spatially locked to the physical art - tracking holds as the user moves freely around the store.
Extend
The digital arrow launches beyond the store walls, projecting through the window and into the street. This spatial overflow is the conceptual core of the piece: a physical brand icon that refuses to be contained by architecture, visible as a glowing beacon from the sidewalk.
Technical Approach
Object Tracking
Unlike flat image tracking that relies on 2D pattern matching, this experience uses 3D object recognition to identify the arrow sculpture's volumetric form. The system matches the camera feed against a pre-trained model of the sculpture, enabling stable tracking from multiple angles and distances - critical for an in-store environment where users approach the display from different positions.
Custom 3D Animation
The digital arrow was modeled and animated in Blender with a multi-stage reveal sequence: initial materialization, energy charge-up, and the dramatic extension through the storefront. Shader-based glow effects and particle systems were optimized for real-time rendering on mobile devices while maintaining the visual impact that makes the experience worth sharing.
Spatial Overflow Design
The arrow's trajectory was carefully choreographed to extend from the physical sculpture, through the store window, and into the street. This required precise alignment between the digital animation and the real-world architecture of the store - accounting for window position, ceiling height, and street-level sightlines to ensure the effect reads correctly from both inside and outside.
Instagram AR Deployment
Deployed as an Instagram AR filter via Spark AR, the experience leverages the platform's existing user base and sharing infrastructure. Visitors can capture and share the AR arrow directly to Stories, turning every interaction into organic content distribution. The filter remains permanently active - functioning as an always-on digital layer for the physical store.
